About

»A Cup of Tea« is an animated short film. It was being created at the University of Applied Sciences Augsburg as part of the »Interactive media systems« course of studies. This project was part of my concluding thesis.

Synopsis

The story tells of an old Chinese man living on top of a high mountain. When he recognizes that his teapot is empty he grabs a bowl and walks to the winch he usually uses to get water out of the river at the base of the mountain. After several failures the old man is worn out and, arguably, at the end of his rope, as well as soaking wet because it has started to rain. As he is ready to give up he becomes aware of the bowl filling with rainwater.

Revival of ‘A Cup of Tea’

After having thought some time about what I could and should do in my spare time I came up with the idea of continuing to work on my short movie ‘A Cup of Tea’. The movie wasn’t finished when I presented it one year ago for my final examination and I haven’t touched it since. Now this seemed to be the obvious choice and therefore I restarted my work 3 days ago.

To get an easy start I decided to model and texture some rocks and cliffs. It gave me the perfect possibility to dig a bit deeper into mudbox. It turned out that modeling was faster and easier in 3ds max using procedural displacement maps and some noise modifier instead of mudbox. But mudbox was the perfect tool to texture the rock formations. The Image on the left shows the blocking of the scene without the main character. On the right side you can see a quick render with standard lightning using the new model.

When the workflow was developed it was easy to reproduce the steps and create a second rock formation. It took me about 2,5 hours to do the second cliff.

I will continue to update my homepage so that you can follow the devellopment of my project. If you are interested in joining the project, just drop a mail.

PS: Here is another model I did today:
